Joni Mitchell becomes U.S. citizen after 62 years

Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially become a United States citizen. The 82-year-old musician announced the news via Instagram, sharing a video of her naturalization ceremony and a photo holding an American flag. Mitchell described the milestone as ‘A journey that began 62 years ago.’

Having lived in the U.S. since 1965, Mitchell has spent much of her career as a central figure in the American music scene, particularly within the Laurel Canyon folk movement. While she has long been a resident of California, she previously expressed frustration over her inability to vote in American elections, noting during a 2024 performance that she was ‘one of those lousy immigrants.’

Mitchell will maintain her Canadian citizenship, as both nations permit dual nationality. Her naturalization follows that of fellow Canadian musician Neil Young, who obtained U.S. citizenship several years prior.
