Jons Hensel, Euro Hockey League Founder, Dies at 75

Euro Hockey League founder and former chairman Jons Hensel has died at the age of 75. He led the league until 2015, was honored with the EuroHockey President’s Award, and received a tribute from current EHL chairman Peter Elders, who praised his dedication to the tournament, its participants, sponsors and volunteers.

Beyond his EHL work, Hensel was a prominent figure in Dutch hockey, serving as chairman of AH&BC Amsterdam, contributing to the renovation of Wagener Stadium, and holding a position on the Executive Board of the Amsterdam Sports Institutions. In 2009 he was named a Member of Merit by the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation (KNHB) and was knighted in the Order of Orange‑Nassau in 2010. Colleagues expressed sympathy for his wife, Els, and remembered his lasting impact on the sport.
