Jonty Rhodes warns of future challenges for ODI cricket

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes has expressed concerns regarding the future of One-Day International (ODI) cricket. Speaking at a jersey launch event in Mumbai for the European T20 Premier League, Rhodes noted that while T20 cricket has not negatively impacted Test matches as once predicted, the 50-over format faces unique pressures.

Rhodes suggested that the ODI format might be in trouble in the coming years, specifically predicting a decline in the number of bilateral ODI series. He emphasized that while the 50-over World Cup will remain a vital and exciting event for players and fans, the format occupies a vulnerable position between the shorter T20s and the longer Test matches.

Despite these concerns, Rhodes maintained that it is difficult to imagine the sport of cricket without the 50-over version and highlighted the passion of its global fanbase. He also expressed excitement regarding South Africa's upcoming role as host for the next ODI World Cup.
