João Almeida to miss European Cycling Championships

Portuguese cyclists João Almeida and António Morgado will not participate in the upcoming European Championships in Slovenia. National selector Valter Sousa explained that the decision follows discussions with the athletes, citing their specific current physical conditions and recent irregular competitive periods.

Sousa noted that Morgado had experienced a period of irregularity and illness in September, while Almeida’s season has been inconsistent despite a strong performance in the Vuelta time trial. The decision aims to avoid forcing the athletes' conditions.

The Portuguese elite road race team will consist of four riders: Nélson Oliveira, Tiago Antunes, Pedro Silva, and Afonso Silva. For the time trial event, Nélson Oliveira and Tiago Antunes will compete.
