João Fonseca ends 2026 tennis season to prioritize recovery
Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca has announced he will not compete for the remainder of the 2026 season. The 20-year-old decision, made in consultation with his team, aims to prioritize physical and mental recovery ahead of the 2027 campaign.
Fonseca had initially hoped to return for the European indoor swing, specifically to defend his ATP 500 title in Basel and compete in the Paris Masters. However, ongoing physical issues, most recently an abdominal injury sustained during the North American hard-court swing, have prevented a return to competitive play. His season has been characterized by various injuries, including chronic back pain, wrist, and shoulder issues.
The early conclusion of his season is expected to impact his ATP ranking. Currently ranked 29th, Fonseca is projected to drop toward the 40th position as he will be unable to defend the 500 points from his Basel title and points from the Paris Masters. Despite the end of his official season, he is still scheduled to participate in an exhibition match against Carlos Alcaraz in São Paulo on December 12.
