João Fonseca seeded 22, eyes top ranking at Montreal Masters 1000
Brazilian 19‑year‑old João Fonseca entered the 2026 National Bank Open in Montreal as the tournament’s 22nd seed, receiving a bye into the second round. Ranked No. 27 in the ATP rankings, he will face a qualifier in his opening match and could meet world No. 13 Casper Ruud in the third round or defending champion Ben Shelton (world No. 8) in the round of 16. The draw also places him in the same half as top seed Alexander Zverev.
Fonseca has repeatedly rejected the label “new Guga,” saying he wants to build his own career. In interviews he said his goal is to become world No. 1 and win a Grand Slam within the next three to five years, crediting his family’s support and his decision to turn professional at 17.
