João Fonseca turns 20 while recovering from abdominal injury

Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca is celebrating his 20th birthday while recovering from an abdominal injury in Rio de Janeiro. The injury, which occurred during a training session last Monday, led Fonseca to withdraw from the third round of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 in the United States.

Currently ranked 26th in the world, Fonseca is focusing on his recovery to prepare for the US Open, scheduled to begin on August 30. His participation in the tournament is not yet confirmed.

Fonseca has experienced a rapid rise in professional tennis, securing two ATP titles in 2025 at the Buenos Aires ATP 250 and the Basel ATP 500. His career highlights include reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, where he secured a notable victory over Novak Djokovic. He previously held the number one spot in the junior world rankings after winning the US Open junior title.
