João Fonseca withdraws from US Open due to injury

Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca has officially withdrawn from the 2026 US Open due to an abdominal injury. The 20-year-old, currently ranked 26th in the world, announced the decision via social media, stating that after medical examinations and beginning treatment, it became clear that he needs more time to recover fully to compete at a high level.

The injury, which caused him to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 last week, marks the fourth physical setback Fonseca has faced this season, following previous issues with his lower back, wrist, and shoulder. This absence will result in a loss of 50 ATP ranking points, as he is unable to defend his points from the 2025 tournament.

Fonseca will now focus on his recovery with the goal of participating in the Davis Cup match between Brazil and Switzerland, scheduled for mid-September in Rio de Janeiro. His subsequent plans include the Asian swing, featuring the ATP 500 in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters 1000, provided his health permits.
