Filmmaker João Moreira Salles released the documentary Minha Terra Estrangeira, which follows indigenous leader Almir Suruí and his daughter Txai during Brazil’s 2022 elections. The film, screened at the Bonito Cinesur festival through 1 August, examines the growing presence of Indigenous candidates in the national Congress.

Of the 50 Indigenous candidates who ran in 2022, only five were elected as federal deputies. The documentary highlights a new generation of Indigenous activists, exemplified by Txai, and features contributions from filmmaker Louise Botkay and the Coletivo Lakapoy collective.

Salles says the work aims to show that Indigenous representation is not merely a product of elections but part of a broader social movement.
