João Nuno Batista finishes fourth at World Triathlon stage in China

Portuguese triathlete João Nuno Batista achieved a career-best fourth-place finish at the seventh stage of the World Triathlon Championship Series in Weihai, China. Completing the Olympic distance course—consisting of 1.5km swimming, approximately 40km cycling, and 10km running—Batista recorded a time of 1:41:41.

He finished just 16 seconds away from the podium, trailing the winner, Switzerland’s Max Studer, by 33 seconds. The podium was completed by Spain’s David Cantero in second and Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk in third.

This performance significantly improves Batista’s standing, moving him up 10 positions in the world rankings to 17th in the World Triathlon Series and 16th in the Olympic rankings as he targets the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Batista is part of the Portuguese Triathlon Federation’s Olympic Project and will participate in the championship final in Pontevedra, Spain, on September 23.
