João Pessoa consumer survey finds up to R$ 25/kg price gap for beans

The João Pessoa Municipal Consumer Protection Agency (Procon‑JP) conducted a price survey on 17 June across 17 markets and supermarkets, covering 78 fruit, vegetable and staple items. The study recorded the widest price difference for green beans (vagem), whose price ranged from R$ 9.99 at Box Zé das Frutas (Mercado da Torre) to R$ 34.99 at Supermercado Latorre (Torre), a variation of 250 %. Tomato prices fell compared with the May 20 survey, ranging from R$ 4.99 at Latorre to R$ 12.79 at SuperFácil Atacado, a drop of R$ 7.80 and a 156 % swing. Okra (quiabo) showed the greatest overall swing, up 400.8 % between R$ 4.99 and R$ 24.99. Other notable variations included leeks (R$ 24.99 difference, 100 % swing), garlic (R$ 22.11 difference, 124 % swing), green pepper (R$ 10 difference, 334 % swing) and chayote (R$ 6.01 difference, 306 % swing). The survey sampled a mix of public markets in Central, Torre, Mangabeira and Bairro dos Estados, and supermarkets such as Assaí Atacadista, Bemais, Latorre, Mateus and Manaíra.
