João Pessoa revitalises historic Ponto de Cem Réis and Duque de Caxias

The historic centre of João Pessoa has entered a new phase of urban renewal. The city completed a revitalisation of Praça André Vidal de Negreiros – known as Ponto de Cem Réis – and Avenida Duque de Caxias as part of a broader requalification programme. The works included new paving, restored landscaping, seating, and accessibility upgrades, alongside fiscal incentives, retrofitting of historic buildings and other infrastructure improvements.

Secretary of Preservation, Revitalisation and Innovation Thiago Lucena said the projects are “a much larger effort to re‑qualify the historic centre” and stressed that the benefits go beyond aesthetics, creating a safer, more attractive environment that boosts local commerce and tourism. He quoted, “When we invest in quality public spaces, the benefits extend far beyond the visual, stimulating circulation, entrepreneurship and quality of life.”

Local users welcomed the changes. Long‑time visitor Geane Santos praised the makeover, saying the square is “very good, very beautiful, a huge improvement.” Others highlighted new benches, chess tables for seniors and shaded areas. Traders such as Felipe Soares noted a dramatic turnaround, reporting a 100 % improvement in foot traffic and sales.

The revitalisation is expected to strengthen cultural activity, support small businesses and enhance tourism in the heart of the capital.
