João Pessoa expands combined HIV and STI prevention services

The João Pessoa Municipal Health Department has intensified a combined prevention campaign for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The program offers a range of tools—including male and female condoms, lubricants, regular testing for HIV, syphilis and viral hepatitis, as well as Pre‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)—allowing individuals to choose methods that fit their circumstances. Health‑surveillance manager Danielle Melo emphasized that the approach aims to give people autonomy and security rather than imposing a single method.

Basic Health Units serve as the primary entry point, providing counseling, risk assessment, and rapid tests. When needed, patients are referred to specialized services such as the Centre for Testing and Counseling (SAE/CTA) located at the Jaguaribe Municipal Polyclinic, where PrEP and PEP are administered. The initiative seeks to increase early diagnosis, reduce transmission chains, and promote community‑wide protection.
