João Pessoa expands school sports with street‑football debut and state games

The municipality of João Pessoa, in partnership with the Instituto Futebol de Rua, is training physical‑education teachers to add the street‑football (Futebol de Rua) discipline to its Municipal School Olympics. The new format awards three points for a dribble (penalty‑kick, “moon‑step” or “hat”) and one point for a goal, and matches last ten minutes or until 14 points are reached.

On June 9 the state phase of the 2026 School and After‑School Games for ages 12‑14 began in João Pessoa. Competitions started with athletics at the Federal University of Paraíba, wrestling at the Otacílio Gama Foundation, karate at Colégio Decisão and badminton at the Military Police College. Team sports such as futsal, handball, basketball and volleyball will follow later in various local gymnasiums. The event serves as a qualifier for the national Brazilian School Games to be held in Brasília in September.
