João Pessoa expands women’s protection network, serving 260 victims at new center
The municipal government of João Pessoa, Brazil, has reinforced its network of services for women who experience violence. The city operates the Centro de Referência da Mulher Ednalva Bezerra, offering integrated psychological, legal, social, medical assistance and protection measures. Secretary of Public Policies for Women Nena Martins highlighted that the Maria da Penha law, enacted two decades ago, defined domestic violence as a crime and introduced protective orders that "save countless lives before criminal proceedings conclude."
Located on Afonso Campos street (no. 111) in the city centre, the centre provides accompaniment to police stations, helps women file protective measures and supports them for months or even over a year, depending on individual needs. By 2026 the centre had already assisted 260 women.
The initiative reflects the city’s commitment to a multidisciplinary approach that aims to protect victims, facilitate reporting and enable survivors to rebuild their lives.
