João Pessoa Family Farming Fair Offers Agroecological Goods in Bessa, Manaíra
The Feira da Agricultura Familiar, organized by the Prefeitura de João Pessoa under the “Eu Posso Semear” program, operates in two locations during August. On Wednesdays from 13:00 to 19:00 it is held at Parque Parahyba I in the Bessa neighborhood, and on Fridays from 05:00 to 11:00 it takes place at Praça Chateaubriand Arnaud (Praça da Rotam) in Manaíra.
The fair brings together about 24 families of small and medium‑scale producers—12 at each site—selected from a pool of roughly 350 farmers and livestock keepers coordinated by the Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Trabalho (Sedest). Municipal support includes the provision of seeds for corn, beans, vegetables and fruits, technical assistance throughout the production cycle, and tractor services for land preparation. Vendors sell a variety of agroecological products directly to consumers, such as leafy greens, root vegetables, fruits like banana, pineapple and mango, and other vegetables.
The initiative aims to promote healthy, pesticide‑free food, generate income for local producers and strengthen the regional agricultural value chain, continuing even on the city’s 441‑year anniversary holiday.
