João Pessoa French Bread Prices Spike Over 100%, Procon Report Shows

A survey by the João Pessoa Consumer Protection Agency (Procon‑JP) found that the price of a kilogram of traditional French bread varied from R$ 12.00 to R$ 24.98 across the city, a swing of 108.17 %. The study, conducted on 20 July in 32 bakeries, also recorded similar price gaps for whole‑grain, hamburger and hot‑dog breads, with the highest variations exceeding 150 %.

The price findings come amid broader interest in the Brazilian “pão francês,” a staple whose names differ regionally – cacetinho in Rio Grande do Sul, pão de sal in Bahia and Minas Gerais, and other local terms. Nationwide, Brazilians consume about 8 million rolls per day in São Paulo alone, amounting to roughly 400 tons daily, underscoring the product’s cultural and economic significance.
