João Pessoa health officials issue pigeon risk alert for summer
The Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) of João Pessoa, through its Environmental Surveillance Management (GVAM), has issued an alert regarding the increased presence of pigeons in the capital due to rising temperatures and the approaching summer.
Increased tourism and higher volumes of waste production and disposal create environments conducive to bird concentration in urban spaces. High-density areas include the João Pessoa and Cabedelo waterfronts, public markets, and the city center.
Health officials warn of several risks associated with pigeon exposure, including the inhalation of dried fecal dust, contact with skin or eyes, and accidental contamination of food and water. Serious pathologies identified include cryptococcosis, which can lead to meningitis, and histoplasmosis. Additionally, there are risks of toxoplasmosis and various allergic reactions or conjunctivitis.
