João Pessoa installs first larvicide dissemination station
The João Pessoa Municipal Government, through its Municipal Health Secretariat and Environmental Surveillance Management, has installed the city's first Larvicide Disseminating Station (EDL). The station is located at a strategic point on Rua José Lourenço Pereira in the Novais neighborhood.
This new method is designed to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector for dengue, zika, and chikungunya. The station features a surface impregnated with larvicide. When female mosquitoes land on the surface to lay eggs, they pick up small particles of the product on their legs and bodies. As they move to other water containers—such as tires, gutters, or water tanks—they inadvertently spread the larvicide, helping to interrupt the mosquito's life cycle.
Juliana Trigo, manager of Environmental Surveillance in João Pessoa, stated that the strategy utilizes the natural behavior of the female mosquito to expand the reach of control efforts in high-risk areas like scrapyards and construction sites.
