João Pessoa launches home vaccination for bedridden elderly
The City Hall of João Pessoa has launched a home vaccination strategy using the Pneumococcal 20 vaccine, specifically targeting bedridden and institutionalized elderly residents. This initiative aims to provide access to the vaccine for individuals with mobility restrictions who cannot visit health centers.
Health teams from Family Health Units (USF) will identify eligible seniors through active searches conducted by Community Health Agents. The administration of the Pneumo 20 vaccine, provided by the Ministry of Health, will be evaluated on an individual basis according to vaccination history and recommended intervals. The vaccine protects against 20 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which causes diseases such as pneumonia and meningitis.
During home visits, professionals will also assess and update other necessary vaccinations, including Influenza and Covid-19. Families and caregivers can also request home vaccination through the ‘João Pessoa na Palma da Mão’ mobile application. Additionally, while some mobile vaccination points may observe schedule changes during local holidays, municipal health unit vaccine rooms will remain operational to ensure continuous access.
