João Pessoa municipality expands animal welfare services in 2026

The João Pessoa city government, through its Secretaries of Animal Care and Protection (Secupa) and the Environment (Semam), reported 4,654 animal‑care procedures between January and April 2026. The programme emphasized population control, clinical care and anti‑abuse measures.

Secupa performed 2,758 spay/neuter operations, including 859 male dogs, 604 female dogs, 731 female cats and 564 male cats. A mobile “Castramóvel” unit castrated 29 animals on 31 March. Veterinary consultations exceeded 1,800, with 686 at the municipal Veterinary Hospital and 1,141 scheduled at the City Pet Clinic. A vaccination drive on 25 April immunised 40 animals. The agency also logged 1,746 reports of animal mistreatment, resolving 63.4 % of cases.

Officials said the expanded services demonstrate the city’s commitment to animal protection and improve quality of life for both pets and residents.
