João Pessoa police investigate infant death involving pesticide

The Civil Police of Paraíba are investigating the death of a one-year-old baby in an informal settlement in central João Pessoa. A toxicology report released by the Scientific Police Institute (IPC) identified the presence of terbufos, an organophosphate pesticide, in the child's body.

The autopsy concluded that the cause of death was bronchoaspiration and exogenous intoxication caused by the poison. The infant, identified as Noah, was taken to the Emergency and Trauma Hospital on September 7 after showing symptoms of agitation and choking, but did not survive.

Investigators are working to determine whether the ingestion of the pesticide was accidental or criminal. Initial suspicions suggested the child may have consumed poisoned food intended for cats. The Homicide Division is currently conducting a confidential investigation, interviewing those responsible for the child and local residents to clarify the circumstances.
