João Pessoa schools implement assistive technology for visual impairment inclusion

The Municipal Education Network of João Pessoa is expanding the use of assistive technology to promote inclusion for students with visual impairments. These tools are being integrated into school routines to foster autonomy and improve how students learn and interact with the world.

At the Escola Municipal General Rodrigo Otávio in Bairro dos Estados, students have access to various resources, including smart glasses, notebooks, Braille printers, Braille lines, electronic magnifiers, screen readers, voice scanners, and Braille typewriters. The school currently serves approximately 60 students with diagnosed disabilities, with over 100 others requiring specialized attention.

Students report that these technologies, such as mobile screen readers and smart glasses, have provided significant independence, allowing them to perform tasks like reading books or using cell phones without needing constant assistance from others.
