João Pessoa's new public cinema launches French film showcase

The municipal Cultural Foundation (Funjope) of João Pessoa inaugurated the city's first public cinema, offering free screenings on weekends. For July, the venue is presenting the "Mostra Institut Français de Cinema," a selection of French films organized in partnership with the French Embassy, the Alliance Française and the Institut Français de Cinema. The programme coincides with Bastille Day and aims to broaden access to contemporary French cinema for local audiences.

Municipal cultural director Marcus Alves said the event reflects João Pessoa's long‑standing ties with French audiovisual culture and supports the city’s policy of cultural democratization. French Consul‑General in Recife Serge Gas praised the collaboration, noting cinema’s importance to French cultural diplomacy. Alliance Française director David Sève highlighted the showcase as a step toward deeper cultural dialogue between Brazil and France. The lineup includes titles such as "Calamidade: uma infância de Martha Jane Cannary."

The initiative is expected to foster new audiences, strengthen citizenship, and enrich the city’s cultural diversity.
