Joonggonara reports surge in low-cost used smartphone trades

Data from the South Korean secondhand marketplace Joonggonara reveals a significant shift toward budget-friendly mobile devices. Between January and September of this year, nearly half of all smartphone transactions completed via the platform's secure payment system were for devices priced under 300,000 KRW, accounting for 48.2% of total trades. This is a 10.4 percentage point increase from 37.8% during the same period last year.

While the total volume of smartphone transactions rose by approximately 29% year-on-year, the average transaction value per unit dropped by about 41%, falling from the 830,000 KRW range to 490,000 KRW. This trend is attributed to rising prices for new premium models, driving consumers toward older or more affordable options.

Both Samsung and Apple saw increased demand in the sub-300,000 KRW category, with Samsung Galaxy trades in this bracket rising by 71.8% and Apple iPhone trades by 44%. Samsung's overall market share in Joonggonara's secure transactions grew from 38.8% to 46.5%, while Apple's share declined from 36.9% to 30.6%. The Galaxy S25 series was the most searched and traded model, while the iPhone 13 series saw the highest volume among Apple products, with the iPhone 13 mini making up over half of those sales.
