Joplin proposes $170.8 million budget for Fiscal Year 2027

The City of Joplin has released its preliminary budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2027, which runs from November 1, 2026, through October 31, 2027. City Manager Nick Edwards is recommending a comprehensive expenditures budget of $170.8 million to support the operations of the city’s 15 departments.

Finance Director Leslie Haase noted that the budget development is a six-month process involving payroll, operations, capital, and revenue planning. While core services will continue to be funded, capital spending is projected to decrease from $65 million to $51 million as certain grant-funded projects conclude. The budget also incorporates American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, which Haase described as “transformational” for the city.

A public hearing is scheduled for Monday, August 24, at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to allow for citizen input. Following the hearing, the City Council will hold work sessions on September 22 and 23. Final adoption of the budget is expected in October.
