Jordan Bardella calls for conditional aid to Ukraine
Jordan Bardella, president of France’s National Rally, stated at the Ambrosetti Forum in Italy that France should not provide unconditional financial support to Ukraine indefinitely. Speaking at the event in Cernobbio, Bardella argued that the current approach to aid must be redesigned to include guarantees or counterparts, citing France’s significant public debt and budget deficits.
Bardella suggested that future assistance should be tied to repayment guarantees or access to resources, drawing a comparison to the U.S.-Ukraine minerals fund model. While he clarified that France would not abandon Ukraine, he emphasized that the nation cannot finance the war “ad vitam æternam” without securing its own fiscal interests. This stance follows previous comments from party vice president Louis Aliot regarding the potential reduction of aid under a National Rally government.
