Patriarchate of Jerusalem prepares for 2,000th anniversary of Christ's Baptism
The Holy and Sacred Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, presided over by Patriarch Theophilos, met on August 13, 2026, to discuss administrative and pastoral matters. A primary focus of the meeting was the preparation for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Christ, which will take place in 2030 at the site of the baptism in Jordan.
The Synod acknowledged the support of the King of Jordan for this Christian anniversary. Discussions also addressed the management of holy sites, the protection of shrines, and the challenges faced by pilgrims due to the current instability in the Middle East. The Patriarch provided updates on his recent visits to the United States, Greece, the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the Gaza Strip.
Additional agenda items included the establishment of an International Orthodox University at the site of the baptism, clerical appointments, and updates on the functional life of holy sites. The Synod also reviewed reports from patriarchal representations in Cyprus and Athens and addressed legal frameworks regarding Christian family law and lawyer licensing in Jordan.
