Jordan calls emergency meeting over Israeli Al‑Aqsa incursion
Jordan has convened an emergency meeting of foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic nations after a large‑scale Israeli incursion at the Al‑Aqsa compound in Jerusalem. On 23 July more than 2,000 right‑wing Israeli settlers, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, entered the Temple Mount area, prayed and performed rituals, violating the long‑standing status‑quo agreement that permits only Muslims to worship at the site.
Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi warned that any attempt to alter the status‑quo could trigger a broader religious conflict that would reverberate beyond Palestine and Jordan to the entire Muslim world. The emergency summit, hosted in Amman, will bring together counterparts from Arab‑League states as well as Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan, with Turkey’s intelligence chief Hakan Fidan slated to attend. Jordan also expressed concern over a recruitment drive for a special Temple Mount police unit and the upcoming Jewish holidays in September, which could further test its custodial role under the 1994 Jordan‑Israel peace treaty.
