Midway through England’s 3‑2 round‑of‑16 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, midfielder Jordan Henderson attempted to jump over an advertising board during the post‑match celebrations. He lost his balance, fell heavily and fractured his left wrist, prompting immediate medical assistance, oxygen and a stretcher.

Henderson was taken to a hospital in Mexico City, where imaging confirmed a serious fracture. He subsequently flew to the United States and underwent surgery at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. The procedure was reported as successful, but the injury rules him out for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite being sidelined, Henderson said he will remain with the England squad in Kansas City to support the team ahead of their quarter‑final against Norway. Coach Thomas Tuchel described the injury as “quite serious” and indicated stricter post‑match protocols may follow.
