Jordan tourism collapses amid Iran-US conflict

Jordan's tourism industry, which accounts for approximately 15% of its economy, is facing a severe crisis due to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Following travel warnings from various governments and the cancellation of flights by airlines, major sites like Petra have seen a massive drop in visitors. Local tourism officials report that daily visitors to the Al-Khazneh tomb have plummeted to between 300 and 500 people, compared to previous levels that were dozens of times higher.

Beyond economic losses, Jordan is facing increased security threats. The country has become a target for Iranian strikes and pro-Iranian militias, with US bases in the country experiencing attacks that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers.

Political experts suggest that Iran is utilizing propaganda to encourage the Jordanian population to join the struggle against US forces, aiming to destabilize the country from within. This strategy targets existing domestic tensions, particularly among the large segment of the population with Palestinian roots who may oppose US and Israeli partnerships. To mitigate the economic fallout, the Jordanian government is utilizing subsidies to maintain low prices for essential goods like flour and wheat.
