Jordi Amat's 'Las batallas de Barcelona' chronicles five decades of the city's cultural battles

Jordi Amat, a philologist, journalist and writer, released the book "Las batallas de Barcelona" with Tusques t. The 288‑page volume, priced at €19.90, follows a successful Catalan edition from Edicions 62 and is now available in Spanish.

The work surveys Barcelona’s cultural imaginaries from 1975 to 2025, tracing events such as the trans performance of the artist Ocaña, the documentary "Waiting for Barcelona", and the post‑1996 urban climate after the Olympic Games. It highlights the violent eviction of the Hotel Princesa social centre in 1996, the controversial Forum of Cultures, and the flamboyant actions of mayor Joan Clos, arguing that these moments reveal how citizens relate to the city.

Amat states that the book’s purpose is to understand Barcelona’s evolution through the cultural discourses it has generated, drawing on songs, films, essays, catalogues and novels to map the city’s contested identity.
