Jorge Amado commemorated at Flipelô 25 years after his death

The 10th edition of the Festa Literária Internacional do Pelourinho (Flipelô) hosted a panel to mark 25 years since the death of Brazilian novelist Jorge Amado. Historians highlighted his role in portraying Bahia’s streets, cuisine, and social issues, noting that his works such as *Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos* and *Gabriela, Cravo e Canela* have been translated into 55 countries. Rafael Dantas, a historian, described Amado as a “translator of Bahia’s way of life” and emphasized his focus on racial tensions, gender, and labor themes. Paloma Jorge Amado, the writer’s daughter, attended and reflected on her father’s lasting influence. The event underscored Amado’s cultural legacy and his contribution to Brazilian literature.

The commemoration also reminded readers of Amado’s broader impact, including numerous adaptations for film, television, and theater, and his 1994 Camões Prize. While the celebration was centered in Salvador, Brazil, it reinforced his status as a globally recognized literary figure.
