Jorge Asjana elected as new rector of the University Autonomous of Santo Domingo (UASD)

The University Autonomous of Santo Domingo (UASD) held internal elections on June 17 to choose authorities for the 2026‑2030 term, filling 121 positions including the rectorship, four vice‑rectorates, nine deanships and numerous school and campus directorates. Voter turnout reached 97 % of the eligible university community.

In the rector race, Dr. Jorge Asjana David secured a decisive victory with 2,013 votes (66 %) against former rector Radhamés Silverio González, who obtained 967 votes (32 %). Asjana thanked the outgoing rector Editrudis Beltrán and other officials for their calls of support during the transition.

Among the vice‑rectorates, economist Antonio Ciriaco led the Administrative vice‑rectorate with 1,462 votes (48 %), closely followed by Alexi Martínez (43 %). Other contests saw Rosell Fernández win the Teaching vice‑rectorate, Juana Encarnación the Research and Postgraduate vice‑rectorate, and Lenchy Vargas the Extension vice‑rectorate. In the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, Carmen Chevalier emerged as the top‑vote‑getter.

The elections were described by participants as “democratically transparent” and a unifying moment for the university, with candidates emphasizing student welfare, academic strengthening and greater societal connection.
