Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong named new Archbishop of Puebla

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong as the new Archbishop of Puebla. Patrón Wong, currently the Archbishop of Xalapa, is scheduled to officially take office on November 19, 2026.

This appointment follows the resignation of Monsignor Víctor Sánchez Espinosa, who served as the Archbishop of Puebla for 17 years. Sánchez Espinosa submitted his resignation due to age requirements under canon law and will remain as Apostolic Administrator to oversee the transition period.

Patrón Wong, originally from Mérida, Yucatán, has an extensive ecclesiastical background, including serving as the Secretary for Seminaries in the Vatican. His predecessor, Sánchez Espinosa, noted that Patrón Wong is well-acquainted with the region, having studied in Puebla and served as Bishop of Papantla.

In a separate appointment, Víctor Alejandro Aguilar Ledesma has been named the new Bishop of Querétaro, succeeding Fidencio López Plaza, who resigned due to age. Aguilar Ledesma, previously the Bishop of Celaya, expressed his commitment to serving the Querétaro community and continuing the work of his predecessors.
