Jorge Carrascosa reflects on 1978 World Cup resignation

Former Argentine football captain Jorge Carrascosa is being remembered for his significant decision to withdraw from the national team five months before the 1978 World Cup. Despite being a key figure under coach César Luis Menotti and the designated captain for the tournament, Carrascosa personally informed Menotti of his resignation in January 1978.

Carrascosa has stated that his decision was made to maintain a “clear conscience.” While his departure occurred during Argentina's military dictatorship and has often been linked to the political climate of the era, the former defender has clarified his personal motivations regarding the choice.
