Jorge Chávez Airport access at risk from Rímac River flooding

Authorities in Callao have issued a warning regarding the potential loss of land access to Jorge Chávez International Airport due to the Rímac River. The Callao Provincial Municipality expressed concern that intense rains associated with the El Niño phenomenon could cause the river to swell, potentially compromising the Bailey bridges used to access the terminal.

Local officials, including Mayor César Pérez, noted that a significant increase in water flow could destroy these structures. Concerns have been raised regarding the delay in river desiltation and cleaning works, which are reportedly pending due to contracting processes within the Callao Regional Government. While the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) stated that bridge maintenance was performed on August 4, officials warn that accumulated debris and rocks in the riverbed increase the risk of structural damage during heavy rainfall.
