Jorge Eliécer Laverde faces conflict‑of‑interest allegations in Colombia's comptroller race

The selection process for Colombia’s next Contralor General of the Nation has been clouded by multiple allegations against several candidates. Journalist investigations link candidate Jorge Eliécer Laverde, a Senate commission secretary, to senator Mario Castaño, who is under investigation for leading a national corruption network. Laverde’s name appears in the judicial file of that case, which he publicly denies. Additional concerns include a contract awarded to a close friend under Laverde’s supervision and the hiring of his wife as an adviser in the Ministry of ICT during a period when his commission oversaw related technology matters.

Laverde also faces an anonymous complaint of alleged sexual harassment and workplace misconduct, which he rejects and has asked authorities to investigate. Another candidate, Ana Elena Monsalvo Herrera, is the partner of Bogotá’s comptroller Juan Camilo Zuluaga and was appointed to the national comptroller’s office in 2022 after serving as campaign chief for fellow aspirant Andrés Castro. Her family ties to a brother convicted for misappropriating school feeding program funds raise further conflict‑of‑interest questions.
