Jorge Eliécer Laverde Vargas elected Comptroller General of Colombia

Jorge Eliécer Laverde Vargas has been elected by the Colombian Congress as the new Comptroller General of the Republic for the 2026-2030 term. He secured the position with 269 votes following a selection process that included public calls, knowledge evaluations, and academic assessments.

Laverde Vargas, a lawyer with doctoral studies from the Universidad Católica de Colombia and post-doctoral work from the University of Bologna, pledged to make the office a “house of transparency” and a technical institution serving the Colombian people.

The election has sparked discussions regarding a potential political rapprochement between the governing Pacto Histórico and the opposition Centro Democrático. Reports suggest a meeting held on August 6 in Bogotá may have involved an agreement to support Laverde Vargas, with some indications suggesting President Gustavo Petro may have been present. This alleged cooperation follows the selection of Honorio Henríquez as President of the Senate.
