Gilberto Mora to Remain with Xolos Until Turning 18 Under FIFA Rules

Mexican midfielder Gilberto Mora will stay with Club Tijuana Xolos for the upcoming Apertura season because FIFA’s transfer regulations prohibit international moves for players under 18, except in narrow family‑relocation cases. The 17‑year‑old, who turns 18 in October 2026, is under contract for three more seasons and will therefore continue playing in Liga MX until he meets the age requirement.

Club owner Jorge Hank Rhon confirmed the decision, noting that while European interest – including from clubs such as Liverpool, Barcelona and Manchester United – is strong, Mora can only consider a move after his birthday. His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, urged patience, asking that the player be allowed to develop without excessive pressure following his notable performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mora’s continued presence also highlights Tijuana’s role as a training base for the Iranian national team during the tournament, showcasing the city’s facilities and hospitality. The club’s contract, reportedly valued at €10 million, runs until 2029, giving Xolos control over his development while the player eyes a future European transfer.
