Cristiano Ronaldo called up to Portugal squad by Jorge Jesus

Cristiano Ronaldo has been called up to the Portugal national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures at age 41. The inclusion marks the first squad announcement by new head coach Jorge Jesus, who succeeded Roberto Martínez following Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup.

Coach Jorge Jesus emphasized a merit-based approach, stating that Ronaldo's historic achievements and five Ballon d'Or awards will not guarantee him a starting position. Jesus noted, “If he performs, he plays. If he does not perform, he does not play,” asserting that current form and training performance are the sole deciding factors.

Jesus and Ronaldo previously worked together at the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. The 25-man squad includes several players with prior experience under Jesus, such as João Félix, and features returns for players like João Palhinha and Fábio Silva. Portugal is scheduled to begin its Nations League campaign against Wales on September 24, followed by matches against Norway and Denmark.
