Jorge Julio López: 20 years since the disappearance of key witness

Twenty years after the disappearance of Jorge Julio López, a key witness in trials against former military dictators, human rights organizations and the government of Buenos Aires held commemorations in La Plata. López, who had previously survived a disappearance during the military dictatorship, vanished again on September 18, 2006, while attending the final arguments of the trial against former police official Miguel Etchecolatz.

To aid the search, the Province of Buenos Aires has doubled the reward for information leading to his location, raising it to 10 million pesos. While the judicial investigation remains without suspects, authorities are currently analyzing approximately 10 million telephone records from the period surrounding his disappearance to find new leads.

In La Plata, large-scale marches were held to demand truth and justice. The events included the inauguration of a photographic exhibition and the screening of the documentary ‘Un legado contra el olvido’. Rubén López, the son of the disappeared witness, emphasized the importance of maintaining his father's legacy of testimony and the ongoing struggle for memory and justice.
