Jorge Macri implements new controls on used cell phones in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri has issued a decree to strengthen controls over the sale and repair of used mobile phones to combat the trade of stolen devices. The measure declares a 90-day emergency for the commercialization and repair of used cell phones throughout the city.

Key components of the decree include the creation of a traceability registry for repair and commercial activities. In designated “High Criticality Zones,” the city will suspend new authorizations for mobile repair shops, and existing businesses must prove the legitimate origin of every part and device they possess.

The Government Agency of Control and the Ministry of Security will conduct coordinated inspections to verify the legal possession of phones and spare parts. Businesses unable to prove the legitimate origin of their inventory face closure.
