Jorge Mateo released by Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves have officially released 31-year-old utility player Jorge Mateo. Mateo, who signed a one-year deal with Atlanta in January, was previously designated for assignment on August 3.

Mateo’s departure follows a season where he served in a utility role, primarily contributing through speed and defense. During his tenure with the Braves, he appeared in 67 games, hitting .240 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. His playing time fluctuated due to injuries to teammate Ha-Seong Kim and the emergence of Jim Jarvis.

Following his release, Mateo is expected to sign with a new team soon. MLB insiders report that the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox have expressed interest in the veteran infielder/outfielder. If Mateo signs with a club before August 31, he will remain eligible for postseason play.
