Tampa Bay Rays sign utility player Jorge Mateo
The Tampa Bay Rays have signed utility player Jorge Mateo to a major-league contract. Mateo, 31, joins the Rays after being released by the Atlanta Braves earlier this month.
A veteran journeyman, Mateo previously spent five seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and debuted with the San Diego Padres in 2020. His career statistics include a .223 batting average, 34 home runs, 132 RBIs, and 116 stolen bases. Notably, he led the American League with 35 steals in 2022.
In addition to the Mateo signing, the Rays have made several roster moves, including recalling right-handed pitcher Jesse Scholtens from Triple-A Durham, optioning Michael Grove and Carson Williams to Durham, and designating Trevor Martin for assignment.
