Argentina university workers hold national strike over budget and wages
Argentine university faculty and staff conducted a 24-hour national strike on Wednesday, August 12, to protest against budget cuts and demand the full implementation of the University Funding Law. The strike, organized by the Frente Sindical de Universidades Nacionales (FreSU Federal), affected public institutions across the country, including the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), and included demonstrations at the Obelisco in Buenos Aires.
Unions claim a salary debt of approximately 28.5% exists as of June, arguing that recent wage increases have failed to keep pace with inflation. They are also calling for increased funding for university hospitals and student scholarships. In response, the Ministry of Human Capital characterized the strike as “political and illegitimate,” asserting that the government is up to date with its financial transfers and commitments.
The Ministry has scheduled a collective bargaining meeting for September 1. However, labor organizations have already announced further actions, including a national strike scheduled from August 18 to August 22.
