Jorge Polanco to undergo season-ending ankle surgery

New York Mets infielder Jorge Polanco will undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle to treat bursitis. The announcement was made by interim manager Andy Green, who stated that Polanco reached a point where he “just can’t get freedom from the pain.”

Polanco, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract to replace Pete Alonso, struggled through a difficult debut season in New York. He appeared in only 37 games, recording a .148 batting average, two home runs, and six RBIs. His season was plagued by various health issues, including previous stints on the injured list for wrist, back, and knee ailments.

With Polanco sidelined, the Mets have turned to players like Jared Young and Mark Vientos to fill the void at first base. The team has recalled Eric Wagaman to the roster to provide depth. Polanco is expected to begin a rehabilitation process with the goal of participating in spring training in 2027.
