José Batlle y Ordóñez faces scrutiny over urban waste burial
In José Batlle y Ordóñez, Uruguay, municipal waste management has come under scrutiny following reports of improper disposal methods. Local official Conrado Da Cunha confirmed that the municipality operated without a collection truck for approximately four weeks due to mechanical failure.
To manage the accumulation of waste during this period, authorities resorted to burying refuse in a private plot located within the urban area. While the municipality has since repaired the vehicle and resumed transporting waste to the regular site in Pirarajá, the incident has raised environmental concerns. Local council member Ana Laura Nis has raised questions regarding whether the site used for burial had the necessary authorization from the Ministry of Environment, citing potential risks to local water sources.
