José Bogas appointed to Australian miner Berkeley as it sues Spain over $1 bn uranium project
José Bogas, the former chief executive of Endesa, has been named an independent non‑executive director of Australian uranium miner Berkeley. The appointment was announced in a company statement that highlighted Bogas' more than four decades of experience in the Spanish and European energy sectors and his extensive business and government contacts.
Berkeley is pursuing international arbitration against Spain, seeking roughly €1 bn (about $1.25 bn) in compensation for the Spanish government's veto of its Salamanca (Retortillo) uranium mine and processing plant. The project was rejected by the Ministry of Ecological Transition in 2021 after the Nuclear Safety Council denied the necessary permits. The company says Bogas' involvement will help resolve the permitting impasse and move the project toward production.
Following the news, Berkeley’s share price rose over 3 % on the market, indicating investor confidence in the strategic hire.
