José Contreras executed in Moca during Dominican Restoration War

José Contreras, a prominent Dominican independence fighter and martyr of the Restoration War, was executed in Moca on May 20, 1861. His execution was ordered by the annexationist government as a deterrent against those opposing the transfer of Dominican sovereignty to Spain.

Contreras led an armed uprising on May 2, 1861, in resistance to the annexation. He was executed alongside other Dominican patriots Cayetano Germosén and José Inocencio Reyes, who had also led movements against the annexation to Spain.
